TRADING POST
Allenheads Contemporary Arts
2011
An eleven month artist residency with Allenheads Contemporary Arts (ACA), located in a small ex-ming community in rural Northumberland. The idea was to regenerate the former village post office, closed since 2007, back into a place for gathering and exchange.
Developed through regular conversation and encounter between village residents and visitors to the region, Andrew created a Trading Post in the heart of this rural community.
Trading Post brought together a diverse collection of objects, songs, stories, and sounds which were archived and exhibited as they grew.
This assemblage became a co-created instalation which presented a broad portrait of the local and passing village community.
“The collection at ACA offers a tableau of its locality – through the objects, songs and sounds of the place, and it’s people”
Allenheads Contemporary Arts
Based in the Old Schoolhouse overlooking the village of Allenheads in Northumberland, ACA is an artist-led organisation that has worked regionally, nationally and internationally to deliver innovative contemporary arts projects.
ACA was established in 1995 by artist Alan Smith and curator Helen Ratcliffe.
